Abstract

The operating system is the primary software that enables interaction between users and computer hardware. This research aims to examine the meaning, basic functions, development history, and types of operating systems based on a literature review. The evolution of operating systems has taken place through five generations, starting from computers without an operating system to the multi-user and multitasking systems used today. This research also identifies various types of operating systems such as DOS, Windows, and UNIX, as well as the important role of the boot process in ensuring the operating system can run correctly. From the results of this study, it was found that operating systems continue to develop to meet increasingly complex computing needs, such as distributed computing and artificial intelligence.
